Top forty

Top forty means the forty currently most popular songs, often within a genre or a radio concept; it also means a radio concept itself, known as Contemporary Hit Radio (CHR).

CHR focuses on playing modern music.

Having been created in response to the rising popularity of television as a threat to radio, top forty was popularized by Todd Storz and Gordon McLendon.
